Mark Webster was ”gutted” but remained defiant after his PDC World Darts Championship was ended by a dramatic third round defeat to Daryl Gurney.
The former BDO champion suffered an occasionally ill-tempered 4-3 loss to the highly tipped Northern Ireland player, who now faces the daunting task of a quarter final clash with tournament favourite and world number one Michael van Gerwen.
Webster missed five doubles to go 2-0 up as Gurney took the next three sets and then missed five doubles of his own for victory, allowing the Denbigh man to take the sixth set. It took another two attempts before Gurney dealt the killer blow on the number 25 seed.
After the match at Alexandra Palace, Webster told darts correspondent Dan Dawson that he still knew he was a better player than Gurney but now, he needed to prove it.
