Despite the chilly sea temperatures of early March RNLI lifeguard supervisors have been put through their paces as part of their pre-season training programme.

The RNLI will be operating a lifeguard service in partnership with Denbighshire Council on Rhyl and Prestatyn beaches this summer and yesterday the area’s lifeguard supervisor, along with fellow supervisors from Wirral and Sefton in North West England, refreshed their skills on some of the charity’s water rescue equipment.

The team took to the chilly waters for the exercise and the video shows RNLI Lifegaurd Supervisor for Denbighshire Matt Jessop and Wirral Lifeguard Supervisor Ryan Jennings pulling would-be casualty RNLI Lifeguard Manager Peter Rooney out of the water and into the inshore rescue boat during the mocked-up rescue.

Peter said: ‘It was certainly a good job we had full winter wetsuits, gloves and boots on as the waters certainly weren’t warm for this training!

‘Yesterday’s exercise was part of the extensive programme of training provided by the RNLI to all Lifeguard Supervisors. The Supervisors will then oversee the training of their respective lifeguard teams ahead of the season so this is an essential step towards keeping beach users in Denbighshire safe.’

RNLI lifeguard recruitment is now open and the RNLI is looking to hear from prospective recruits keen to make the beaches Denbighshire their office and get kitted, paid and trained to save lives this summer.

Peter added: ‘The RNLI wants to recruit an enthusiastic and professional team of lifeguards who will get paid to save lives this summer.

‘We’re looking for strong swimmers who can swim 400m with a good level of fitness aged over 16 years old. If you have the raw ability and the will to learn we can help get you fit and qualified.

‘There’s nothing better than making the beach your office, getting paid to train and knowing you have the first aid and rescue skills to save someone’s life at a moment’s notice. It’s the best job you’ll ever have.’
