Rock legend Brian May has taken his fight to stop a proposed badger cull in the South West to the European Parliament in Brussels. The government want to push ahead with a killing programme for badgers, in a bid to stop the spread of TB in herds of cattle.
The Queen guitarist and songwriter today (Thursday 11th October) appealed to MEPs to fast track permission to vaccinate cows against the virus, which is currently against EU law. According to Government figures, 34,000 cattle were slaughtered in the UK last year to control TB. Farmers estimate the cost of taking no action could top a billion pounds over the next decade.
They claim a cull will reduce cases of the virus by at least 16% and vaccination alone would not work.
