Who Are We?
During the summer of 2007 as part of a rolling programme to expand access to the airwaves and encourage the growth of localised and community broadcasting Ofcom announced that Community Radio Licences would be issued including three to serve specific areas in North Wales. Invitations to apply were issued to interested parties in Wrexham, Rhyl and Llandudno.
Established by the Station Director, the applicant company Radio Elwy Point FM Ltd was awarded a license in 2008 to broadcast to Rhyl and surrounding communities including Prestatyn, St Asaph, Rhuddlan, and Abergele. Following a detailed search for suitable premises, Point FM hit the airwaves in March 2010 initially operating out of a redundant ballroom in a hotel, converted to sound and live event studios. A disastrous flood within the building led to an urgent relocation and rebuild, temporarily at studios at the Festival Gardens, Ffrith, Prestatyn, and ultimately on to its present totally self contained and permanent home, West End Studios, Wellington Road, Rhyl, Denbighshire LL18 1LA.
What We Do…
From its inception volunteers and team members set about establishing a vibrant and viable community broadcasting enterprise that would emphasise the strength of the community around it, participating in and reflective of the community it serves. This is delivered by an open, accessible and encouraging approach to broadcasting with emphasis placed on qualitative output, seamless delivery, open audience interaction, and accessible studio feed ins. Social networking, text messaging, live to air phones and emailing are all open to presenter and audience alike. This is enhanced by taking the station to the community directly with outside broadcasts from a variety of locations not just restricted to the primary transmission area.
Broadcasting in English and in Welsh, concentrating on news and views, chat and involvement, Point FM 103.1 has seen a spectacular growth in audience and identity, with feedback from listeners in over 34 countries world wide. We are pleased to repay the confidence shown in us by our listeners, and look forward to being the Point on your radio you reach for first.
