Post-Brexit Rural funding assurances welcomed
The MP for the Vale of Clwyd, Dr James Davies, has welcomed the Chancellor’s statement that EU funding for farmers, scientists and other projects will be replaced by the Treasury after Brexit.
Commenting Dr Davies said,
“There have been a variety of negative comments made to the effect that Wales and the activities that receive EU monies, will lose out after the referendum decision and Brexit. It is very important to point out that existing EU projects will be matched and seen through to completion.
It’s also worth remembering that funds distributed from the EU were basically funds the UK Government had sent over to Brussels so looking forward post-Brexit, when the existing EU projects conclude, the UK Government can fund new schemes.
In many ways such changes could present a great opportunity to devise less bureaucratic local projects devised specifically for our own nation and regions. However this is something that will be examined in detail in the coming years.
For now I am happy that the record has been put straight and that stability has been assured, which in Wales is particularly important for farming and our rural communities.”
After much debate about the way forward, the Chancellor’s statement has been welcomed by rural organisations including the Farmers Union of Wales (FUW).
