Merseyside Police have launched a murder hunt following the death of a Wrexham man.

It’s believed Paul Groom was involved in an assault at a house in Kirkby during the early hours on Thursday. The 48 year-old managed to return home to Fazakerley in north Liverpool but he was taken to hospital after his condition deteriorated – he died on Saturday night.

A post-mortem examination has found Mr Groom suffered fatal head injuries as a result of blunt force.  His family have travelled to the area and are being supported by a liaison officer.

Detectives say they have already spoken to several eyewitnesses who were in the Stanton Crescent area of Kirkby at the time of the attack, but they are still trying to establish Mr Groom’s movements between last Wednesday night and Saturday morning.

DI Craig Turner of Knowsley CID said: ”Paul’s death is a tragedy and has left his family devastated. We are determined to find out what happened… I’d encourage people to look at his picture and cast their minds back to see if they remember seeing him. Paul was wearing a camouflage jacket and camouflage trousers and often walked his pet dog, a brown whippet, in the local area. Any information that helps us build up a picture of Paul’s movements prior to his death on Saturday could be crucial to us understanding what happened and bringing the person or people responsible to justice.”

Anyone with information should contact Knowsley CID at Merseyside Police on 0151 777 6064 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
