A man convicted for a New Year’s Day burglary in Prestatyn has been jailed for fifteen months.

Martin Evans broke into a house on Ffordd Ty Newydd in the early hours of Thursday 1st January while the householders were asleep and stole a rucksack with personal papers, a plasma TV and an Xbox.

The 52 year-old was spotted by the couple’s son, who chased after him until he managed to escape after running over nearby fields. The son had discovered the front door was open after he heard the dog barking outside.

Evans claimed to police that he could not anything remember the burglary having apparently consumed three bottles of wine and cocaine during a bender. But Judge Rhys Rowlands said he did not believe him and rejected a plea from the defence for a suspended prison sentence.

Evans has held several previous convictions, including another count of burglary in 1998.
