There are moments when everything seems to come together so perfectly – and when you’re in radio, that’s exactly the kind of thing you’re waiting for.
We wouldn’t normally do this but for those of you who didn’t hear MatchPoint Live on Saturday, we just had to share again something that we think qualifies as both a golden radio moment and a true piece of FA Cup history.
It looked as though Burnley and giant killing specialists Lincoln City were going to play out a goalless draw as we went on air – only for a certain Mr Barton to stir a little trouble. Then along came Sean Raggett’s swooping header past keeper Tom Heaton to edge the visitors ahead in the final minute of normal time.
Behind the scenes on MatchPoint, a bright spark who makes sure we get all our live IRN reporters to tell us when a goal goes in (no, not me) decided to keep our network man at Turf Moor, Peter Smith, on air to do live commentary on what turned out to be the closing stages of one of the greatest cup shocks in history.
Perhaps rather naturally, I get pretty excited by the unfolding story, too – so if you’ll mind the presenter, take a listen to how we heard the Imps become the first non-league team in over a century to reach the last eight of the world’s greatest cup competition.
And to all Burnley fans…no offence intended. Not even to Joey.
LISTEN: Burnley v Lincoln City – as heard on MatchPoint Live. Match commentator – Peter Smith for IRN.
Listen to MatchPoint Live on Point FM every Saturday afternoon from 2-6pm on 103.1 FM and online at pointfm.co.uk
