NATHANIEL MG CUP QUARTER FINALS
GAP CONNAH’S QUAY 2-1 RHYL
The Lillywhites were as determined to pick themselves up after two costly defeats in the Welsh Premier as they were determined to reach the League Cup semi finals in the hunt for silverware – but it was to no avail against a Nomads side yet to be beaten this season.
Connah’s Quay were at much their dominant best in the first stages. On 18 minutes, away keeper Owen Evans failed to deal with a corner from Sean Smith, which was scrambled in by Les Davies. The Lillywhites kept themselves in good check by threatening down the Nomads’ end, but a foul on Shelton Payne before half time allowed him to pack away a spot kick to open his goal account and leave Niall McGuinness’ men on the rack yet again.
Rhyl were far more in control after the break – with their first effort, Rob Hughes’ cross deflected off Wes Baynes and in past home keeper Jon Danby on 51 minutes. The Lillywhites were lucky to see the Nomads denied at least five shouts at a third goal in a scramble on the hour mark. But the more Rhyl pressed for an equaliser, the more their chances went awry.
A third defeat in all competition ends Rhyl’s League Cup hopes with the Nomads going onto face The New Saints in the last four, following their 2-0 victory at Bangor City.
