I’m not a fan of short nights. I hate the idea of finding day breaking at 4.30am after a mere couple of hours of persisting twilight dusk a bit too much for the mind to cope with. And don’t start about thunderstorms.
But where possible, I like to make the most of them. And with the Saturday job out of the way for the summer – a certain French football tournament notwithstanding – we’re making this ideal timing to revive our excursion into late nights for the next couple of months with a new series of’ ‘The Late Gareth Joy’.
And to kick it all off, we brought you a brand new selection of the best in Welsh music – ideal for festival season, and dare it be said, any weather.
For this third compilation, we’ve been concentrating largely on the year so far. We’ve scoured every corner of the country to source a plentiful supply of new and upcoming releases plus a few experimental cuts and some of the artists playing figurehead to this year’s Horizons project. And there’s a sampling of two albums that have got so many in and outside the Welsh industry excited – namely from The Joy Formidable and Cate Le Bon.
As always, this selection is far from definitive, but hopefully, it’s a selection without compromise, too. Well, except one – we’re not playing any Euro 2016 tracks. That’ll do for another show.
Once again, while we can’t bring you a listen again option (we’ll have to find space for an old fashioned repeat transmission), we can offer you a free music playlist – presenter, commercial and mumbling-free. Beyond all that? Well, foremost in my mind will be what new delights we get to enjoy between now and September. You can be sure that we’re already listening out for this summer’s sounds.
The Late Gareth Joy continues during the summer on Point FM, including the return of Four Track Demos. You can also hear our Track of the Week on Drivetime, every Friday from 4-7pm.
