A young fire service mechanic from the Corwen area has been named as the man killed in a two vehicle crash on the A5.

Trystan Rhun Roberts was driving a red Seat Leon car when it collided with a silver Mercedes near the Siabod cafe in Capel Curig on Tuesday morning – the 19 year-old from Cynwyd was pronounced dead at the scene. He had been working as an apprentice in the Fleet department based at Llandudno Junction.

In a tribute, chief fire officer Simon Smith said: ”Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this incident, but particularly with the family of the colleague we have lost…our service attends road traffic collisions often and they are always difficult for our staff to deal with, but even more so when they involve a close colleague.”

No one else was seriously injured in the crash, which closed the road for almost six hours. North Wales Police have appealed for witnesses to call 101 (quoting reference number U070961).
