Denbigh man arrested after hospital arson attack

A man has been arrested and bailed on suspicion of starting last week’s fire at the former North Wales Hospital in Denbigh.

The 19 year-old man from the town was questioned in connection with the arson attack at the Grade II-listed building on Monday 6th February. He has since been released pending further inquiries.

Four crews from Colwyn Bay, Denbigh, Rhyl and Ruthin took nearly five hours to put out the fire – an investigation into the cause found it was started deliberately but the extent of damage caused remains undisclosed.

The hospital has been targeted several times by arsonists over the last five years, leading to repeated calls for trespassers to stay away from the site, which has been earmarked for future housing.

Anyone who noticed any suspicious activity around the hospital should contact PC Aiden Berry at Denbigh police station on 101, quoting reference number RC17017512, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
