Two men have been remanded in custody over Christmas following a raid at a convenience store on Deeside.

One of the men, Matthew Whelan, is charged with the attempted murder of shopkeeper Imtiaz Ul Haq at Costcutter in Queensferry last Thursday evening. The 29 year-old from Mancot is also accused of robbery, along with Leslie Baines (47) from Connah’s Quay.

The men appeared briefly before Flintshire magistrates in Mold on Saturday after the raid which left Mr Ul Haq needing surgery for knife injuries to his throat. He is now said to be in a stable condition and recovering.

Whelan and Baines are due to enter pleas when they appear before a judge at Mold Crown Court on Friday 6th January.
