A Liverpool couple who used thousands of pounds worth of Tesco vouchers to buy computer tablets and alcohol have been jailed for fraud.
Joseph McDermott and Justine White from Bootle were found guilty of illegally obtaining £6,000 worth of vouchers which were meant for other customers at stores across North Wales, the Wirral and Cheshire last October.
They were finally caught at a store in Abergele when they were confronted by a security guard after McDermott dropped some of the vouchers and a mobile phone onto the floor. A fight broke out, during which, more vouchers fell out from a box White was carrying.
McDermott was jailed for a year and White for eleven months – the goods taken fraudulently has since been returned to Tesco.
Sentencing the pair, Judge Wyn Lloyd Jones said they had been running a commercial operation with the intention to make money and had shown no remorse. He also described the security guard involved, Christopher Parry, as a hero for catching out the couple.
