Council bid to ban ice cream vans near schools

Denbighshire council officials have put forward plans to ban ice cream and burger vans.

A review of the county’s street trading policy could see food vans being barred from outside schools and colleges between 7.30am and 6pm, unless they are given permission from the school.

Vans would also be forced to move at least 50 metres every 20 minutes and cannot return to the same space for at least four hours – anyone caught breaking the guidelines could face prosecution and lose their licence or face suspension.

The council’s report – due to be discussed in Ruthin on Wednesday – states the policy will prevent streets from being obstructed – but a spokesperson for The Ice Cream Alliance said traders would be thwarted in trying to make a living.

Last year, a bid to ban new takeaways from opening near schools was thrown out by councillors.
