A Derbyshire firm has pulled out of its sponsorship of Chesterfield FC following the signing of Ched Evans.

HTM Products said it had ended its backing after six years ”in light of recent events”. Evans, from St Asaph, signed a one year contract with the League One club last week.

The former Wales and Sheffield United striker will go on a retrial in October after his conviction for raping a woman at a Rhuddlan hotel was quashed. He served half of a five year jail sentence before being released in 2014.

Evans said he was ”very excited and privileged to be resuming my career at Chesterfield and I hope to make a valuable contribution both on and off the pitch for the football club, the fans and the community”.

The club previously responded to a BBC survey by saying they would not have signed the striker. Their current manager, Danny Wilson, was in charge of Sheffield United, when Evans last played professionally in 2012.
