Apartments to benefit from make-over in £1m Council investment

Residents of Caradoc Road Apartments in Prestatyn will soon benefit from a major improvement programme to their properties.

The £1.1m project marks the beginning of a 28 week contract, which will see a total of 33 units, located across 4 blocks improved both internally and externally and is expected to be complete by November 2016.

Originally built in the 1960s, the original flats will be brought into the 21st century with work being done on the external features that will give them a modern feel, to include:

  • re-roofed to include insulation
  • new glazed panels to replace the old balustrades
  • new render to the outside
  • grey aluminium double glazing

Other environmental improvements will take place such as creating patio areas with raised beds, to enhance the community feel and to enable the residents to sit outside.  An area will also be created to keep the recycling bins in one place.

Internally, the apartments have already had work done to them to bring them up to a high standard including electrical rewiring and replacement kitchens and bathrooms.  The current communal central heating boilers are to be de-commissioned and each apartment having its own modern, efficient combination boiler installed giving the residents total control over their own heating needs.

Councillor Barbara Smith, Lead Member for Modernisation and Housing said: “Due to the previous investment of the 2008 Welsh Housing Quality Standard improvement programme, it was decided that the buildings could be repaired and modernised far more cost effectively than rebuilding on the existing site.

“The size and existing internal layout of the apartments are suitable for local demand and investing in the stock now will ensure they remain sustainable for the foreseeable future.

“Environmental improvements of this nature are essential to ensure that residents retain a sense of pride in their area.”
