A man is in a serious condition in hospital after a police chase on the A55 near Abergele.

A silver BMW 3 series car overturned near junction 24 at St George at around 11.50am on Saturday morning. The westbound carriageway was closed between junctions 24 and 27 for over two hours after the crash.

North Wales Police later confirmed that officers had been pursuing the vehicle before the crash happened. They have referred the matter to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

The Welsh Air Ambulance attended the scene of the crash but the man was taken by road to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd in Bodelwyddan. He was later transferred to the Royal Stoke University Hospital.

Superintendent Jane Barham said: ”Incidents of this nature are rare and we are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who may have seen the BMW convertible being driven along the A55 prior to the collision.”

Traffic around the area was diverted via the A525 and the A547 for over two hours after the crash. The road was fully reopen by 7pm on Saturday evening.

The crash led to two football matches on the North Wales Coast being delayed by around 15 minutes – Bangor City’s 3-2 win over Cardiff Met in the Welsh Premier and a 3-1 win for Holywell Town at Conwy Borough in the Huws Gray Alliance.

Anyone with information about the crash should call the Roads Policing Unit in Colwyn Bay on 101, quoting reference no. V022928.
